A special place in the community...

I would like to share my writing sample. This writing sample was all about the marae, what it is used for and how it can help the community. The straining thing that I found with my writing was, elaborating my ideas. My final score was 36. That means that I am a 5B, by the end of Year 9. I understood how to structure my writing appropriately, and also how to use a range of language features, such as understanding what the writer is talking about.

A Special Place In The Community - Marae

Introduction

A special place in the community is the marae. Celebrations are where you can commemorate birthdays, whanau reunions, weddings and much more. The marae is the heart of the maori community.  Our whanau connections are from our tupuna. It provides a place for people that don’t have homes. It is also a good place for arts and cultures. Waiata can be performed while there is a Tangighanga. A tangi is a sad and unforgetting place to be. Tangihanga is a time to say your goodbyes to your loved ones.

Celebrations

Celebrations are things that explain your identity, culture and heritage. Celebrations are when you commemorate a birthday. Celebrations are brought to your attention like nothing. Celebrations include lollies, food, games, music and more fun. They are also known for  whanau reunions, weddings and the best thing is Matariki. Celebrations bring your families back together. A celebration is a time to enjoy with your family. Celebrations are the best place to be.

Tangihanga
The marae. What is so important about the marae?, It’s obviously tangihanga. Tangihanga is a sad and unforgettable place to approach. When you enter a marae, it is rude to walk in while the kaumatua are speaking also eating or drinking inside the marae. It is also important not to sit on the pillows while there is a Tangihanga. Tangihanga is the time to say your goodbyes to your loved ones. When your at a Tangi, the kaumatua will speak, and then you will have the privilege to speak, and then sing a waiata.

Arts and culture
Arts and culture can be performed while there is a tangihanga. Arts and culture can help you through your Te Reo Maori assignments. When you walk into a marae, and you see carvings on the walls, that's called arts and culture. You can learn a lot from them. Arts and culture involve singing and dancing too. Usually the kaikaranga will sing a waiata after your kaumatua will speak. The talents of arts and culture is waiata. Everyone has a talent for singing. Arts and culture also explains who you are, where you come from and who your great great grandparents are.

Conclusions
To sum it all up, a special place in the community is our marae. It’s for you and your family to commemorate birthdays, whanau reunions, weddings and much more. A marae is also a special place for tangihanga. It is a time to say your goodbyes to all your loved ones. It is also great for arts and cultures. Arts and cultures could also be performed while there is a tangihanga. Arts and culture explain where you from who your and and who you grandparents are.
